Must have – Guest Post
Back in 2010 I got some good advice. A friend of mine said:
“Write down a list of all the traits you’re looking for in a partner. Put it away in a drawer somewhere and forget about it. It’s your way of asking the universe for Mr. Right”
Well, I wrote the list and I forgot about it as instructed. While keeping one of my New Year’s resolutions to clean more I came across the list in the good ol’ “It drawer.” We all have it! You know what I’m talking about. I started thinking, why don’t I put this on my profile? An edited version mind you, but still, maybe if I’m just as clear about what I want as who I am it can serve as a filtering system.
I’ve been in the game long enough to have learned a lot about what I don’t want but you’ve got to come across as positive on these things so I’ll steer clear of the ‘must not’s’ and stick to the ‘must have’s.’
Just for fun though here’s what my “must not” list would look like:
- Must not live with mother
- Must not be unemployed
- Must not have a mental illness that is not medicated
- Must not do steroids
- Must not hate dogs
- Must not be married
- Must not be best friends with their ex-wife
- Must not play video games as their only hobby
- Must not be more feminine or prettier than me
- Must not put ketchup on steak
Yup that pretty much covers it. I think it’s reasonable, don’t you?

Those lists do help get your brain geared to finding what you want in your life. Great advice and even better that you recommend putting that list into a positive. It’s exactly what I recommend in my book on dating and relationships.
