How to spot an emotional wreck
BEFORE the first date
There was sadness in his eyes. His confidence was shattered and it was incredibly awkward to be sitting across a table from him. You ever experienced second-hand embarrassment? I have. There are only so many times you can say:
“Chin up buddy. You’ll be ok!”
Honestly? I should have turned around and walked out when he pulled out his credit card to pay for our double double’s. Dude. I have a couple of twoonies. Please, let me get this one! I didn’t want to hurt his already clearly bruised ego by insisting so I watched in disbelief as the $3.20 went on his credit card.
Duckie had just had his heart ripped out of his chest, put in a blender, turned to mush, poured into an ice tray, frozen, then thrown into a fire caused by toxic chemicals….I think she probably took him for all he’s worth too. Glad she didn’t rack up his credit card! I wouldn’t have been drinking that coffee. Why he thought it was a good idea to meet women on POF in his state of mind? Not a clue. We spent the next painful hour or so talking about how useless he was, no wonder she left him, he isn’t worthy of anyone. It sounded something like:
Duckie: “I’m useless, no wonder she left me”
Me: “I don’t know you but you seem like a really nice person, you’re a total catch! Don’t say that!”
Sometimes you have to lie. You know? What was I going to say? “Yup, she’s probably right! I’d just kill myself if I were you and get it over with.”
There was something so pathetic about the guy, I just couldn’t say no when he asked me on a second date. What was I thinking? The second date we went to the dog park. Duckie picked me up at my place and got mad when my dog muddied his back seat. Um. Your dog did too….somehow he found the courage to go in for a kiss and he got the cheek.
In hindsight there were clues even in his messages which should have told me he was an emotional wreck:
- Mentioned his ex in messages
- Asked to meet in a wishy washy sort of way…ie. If you aren’t too busy or if you can fit me in
- Shows little to no confidence …ie. I can’t believe you responded
- Says “I just had my heart broken”
I didn’t see Duckie again.
