What to wear on a first date – Guest Post

These boots were made for walkin'...about a block....tops.

When it comes to online dating the first date is actually the second date. At least that’s my take on it. The first date is  like a pre-date, an interview. Usually it’s a pass or fail situation. The first date you meet and see if you actually have some sort of chemistry and of course make sure that everyone involved does in fact look like their profile picture. If things go alright after the first date then you go on your second date, which is the actual first date.

I made the mistake of dressing too ‘first date’ for the pre-date.  I used to wear this dress which I thought was casual but turned out was just a little too sexy for that interview. Men walked away from it with a bit of the case of ‘gutterhead.’  So, learn from my misstep and wear something cute yet casual.  For example: dark straight legged jeans with a pair of stellar high heels, a cute top depending on the season paired with a jacket, and maybe accessorize with either a gorgeous scarf or long dangling earrings. I experience a magical burst of confidence when wearing those tall boys; heels. The exceptions to wearing heels are when:

a) I know the guy is 5.9’ which might already be a stretch on his part and I’m 5.5’ so I don’t want to feel like an Amazon

b) I anticipate a walk. Taking a 2 km walk around the city in a pair of heels may bring out the monster in me.

c) Zombie apocalypse.

Don’t show up looking like a slob to the pre-date. Anything with elastic waist bands is out. Messy bun/pony tail. Out. I know I’ve been guilty of rockin’ the messy bun on top of my head but I didn’t ACTUALLY consider it a date. I was just a buffer. Buffers get to wear elastic pants and buns on top of their heads. However, it is at your own risk. Other buffer could end up being a stud and you might find yourself cursing the person who invented elastic and excusing yourself to go to the washroom, get in front of a mirror, and make the best out of your emergency purse makeup.

Anyway, once both parties have passed the screening, then get ready for the REAL first date. It’s time to pull out all the first-date stops. Wear the dress. Get dolled up. Don’t forget the heels!
